Hello, everyone! Today the topic of our lesson is, “Making and cancelling an appointment” and we are going to learn a lot of new phrases and questions, that will help us.

In the very start, let’s look at the difference between these 2 words:

• An appointment

• A meeting

An appointment is always planned in advance. It’s a planned meeting: you choose a suitable date, and sometimes the place. An appointment is always official.

Meeting has a more general meaning, it could be planned or unplanned, it might be formal and informal.

What types of informal meeting do we have?

A date

A school reunion

A meeting with friends

A party

A hen party

A bachelor party

A farewell party

What types of formal meeting do we have?

Visiting a doctor

A business meeting

A job interview

A conference

A staff meeting

Brainstorming

An annual meeting

A daily meeting

If we want to organize a meeting, we can use verbs such as:

Arrange a meeting

Organize a meeting

Call a meeting

Plan a meeting

Make an appointment

If you want to organize a party, you can use verbs such as:

Arrange a party

Throw a party

Lay on a party for somebody

Give a party

Hold a party

If something has been arranged but can’t go ahead for rome reason, you can use these verbs:

Call off a meeting

Cancel a meeting

If you want to change the date of a meeting, you can:

Postpone a meeting

Let’s hear some conversations and try to guess what kind of meeting is going to be held or cancelled.

Arranging a meeting.

Tom’s mum: Hello, darling! It’s Helen. How are you?

Tom’s dad: Fine, thanks and you?

Tom’s mum: Fine. Are you free tomorrow to pick me up from the airport?

Tom’s dad Sure. I’d love to! When will you arrive?

Tom’s mum; at 7 pm.

Tom’s dad: I am busy tomorrow till 7.15, so I can pick you up at 7.30

Tom’s mum: Sounds great! Shall we say 7 pm at the airport?

Tom’s dad: Sure. See you there.

Tom’s mum: Thanks, Jack. Bye!

Cancelling a meeting:

Kate: Hello, Denis!

Denis: Hello! How are you?

Kate: A little bit sick.

Denis: Oh, no!

Kate: I’m afraid I can’t make it to the café tonight!

Denis: Don’t worry about it! We’ll do it some other time!

Kate: Maybe next week?

Denis: That would be great! Hope you feel better soon!

All these phrases can be use for making and cancelling appointments or meetings.
