Every nation has its own customs and long-lived traditions. There is a great number of exciting events which take place in every country throughout the year. Traditions play an important role in the life of the people. If we keep up our traditions, we preserve national history and culture. Holidays are especially rich in old traditions. There are three types of holidays in different countries: state or public holidays, religious holidays and family holidays.

State holidays usually relate to state history and important events of the country. Such holidays unite people, make them feel proud of their nation. People spend holiday time with their families and friends; they go to theatres or exhibitions, or go to the city centre where there are usually folk festivals and concerts in the open air.

New Year’s Day is the major family holiday for many people in the world. Religious holidays of many countries include Christmas, Easter and some others.

A lot of countries have carnivals, the Russian carnival is called Maslenitsa. It is the time to say goodbye to a long cold Russian winter. People cook and eat a lot of pancakes, play outdoor traditional games.

Family holidays include birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other family celebrations. Different families have different traditions of celebrations.

Most countries in the world celebrate harvest time. The celebrations can be at different times. For example, Jews celebrate the week-long harvest festival of Sukkot in the autumn. Savior of the Apple Feast Day is celebrated in Russia on 19 August. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest festival which is held in Germany from late September to the first weekend in October, more than six million people from around the world attend the event every year.

Thanksgiving is a festival in the USA and Canada. Holi is a Hindu harvest festival. People in the Philippines celebrate the Banana festival. Chuseok is the Korean harvest festival.

Thanksgiving is a big festival in the USA and Canada to celebrate the harvest. Canadians celebrate it in October, and Americans in November. Some cities have parades and people have family dinners. Turkey, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce are popular foods on this day and there is always some sweet pumpkin pie for dessert.

In late March or early April, some people in the Philippines celebrate the Banana Festival. This is a harvest festival about different varieties of bananas. During the festival children dress up in banana costumes and dance in the streets. There is also a cookery competition where cooks use only bananas to make their dishes.

In Northern India they harvest their wheat in Spring which is in the late February or early March. This is also the time for Holi, a Hindu harvest festival that lasts five days. People dress up and light fires. Farmers decorate cows with flowers and let them run free in the streets.

Chuseok is the Korean harvest moon festival and an important holiday in Korea. The festival lasts for three days, usually sometime between August and October. Children dress up and people make sweet rice cakes with fresh fruit.

Now we know a lot of interesting things about harvest time around the world. Now let’s learn some new words!
