Task 9. Read the text about peer pressure and fill in the appropriate headings. One heading is extra.

Peer pressure usually occurs when a person is manipulated by others, especially friends, to do things he/she wouldn’t necessarily want to do. Peer pressure is sometimes so subtle, we are not even aware of it! Peer pressure can be positive and negative. Friends can have a bad influence on a child, but good friends can also influence a child positively.

Negative peer pressure can be described as any (usually unacceptable) behaviour forced onto someone. The child copying the negative behaviour usually does this with the hope of being accepted into the peer group.

Even young children give in to peer pressure. You might have heard your child say: “But everyone at school has this toy, I also have to have it.” This also applies to brand-named clothes and shoes. Negative peer pressure can also be linked to programmes children watch on TV or games they play, although it is not suitable for them.

Start preparing your child at an early age to deal with peer pressure. Here are a few tips on how to help your child not to give in to peer pressure:

  • Be a good example for your children by not giving in to peer pressure yourself!
  • Have a healthy relationship with your children so that they will be able to talk to you should they find themselves in a bad situation with friends.
  • Children need boundaries. Explain to them why you set certain rules and why you will not buy all the toys they want, let them watch certain programmes on TV or allow them to play certain games on the computer or tablet.
  • Teach your child values.
  • Teach your child to avoid friends who don’t accept them for who they are, friends who don’t accept it when they say ‘no’ and friends who don’t have a positive influence in your child’s life.

Just as children can have a negative effect on other children, so they can also have a positive effect on behaviour and support one another. Children are easily influenced by others, thus it is important to have the right friends who share the same values as yours. Here are a few examples of how peer pressure can be positive:

  • Children see when another child’s behaviour and manners are rewarded. Most (especially young) children will copy that behaviour to be rewarded as well.
  • A child is more likely to pay attention to his/her schoolwork when the friends do the same.
  • When friends take part in sport and activities, the child will be motivated to take part in a sport or activity to belong to the team and to experience the team spirit.
  • Children learn to share when friends also share with them.

The lowdown on bullies.

At some point in our lives many of us will have to deal with a bully. Yet bullies are not all the same. To be able to handle such a threat, it is important to know what kind of person you are dealing with.

The most dangerous and common bully is the aggressive one. Aggressive bullies use the fear of violence to control others. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there. They are known to quickly lose their temper and harm their victims without ever feeling sorry for them. When faced with such a person, immediately tell a parent or teacher. Furthermore, stay in public places and amongst others for safety. Some people even learn self-defence to protect themselves against this kind of bully. However, violence is not the answer, as it leads to even more violence.

Next, are the verbal bullies. They attack with words and are only happy when others feel hurt. So when an unkind joke is made, show as little reaction as possible and just walk away. Remember, you cannot talk sense to an unreasonable person. And, above all, never make jokes about yourself to prove that nothing can hurt you. This will only encourage them.

Last, is the computer bully. The best way to deal with this menace is by deleting their messages. Do not read anything they write and never send a reply. When faced with such a person, it is wise to seriously consider a change of email address.

Keep in mind that bullies are simply people who envy the talents of their victims. The only way they can feel powerful is by putting others down. Therefore, never listen to anything they have to say!

Данное задание проверяет не только знание лексики раздела, но и внимание к служебным частям речи, а также умение учитывать такие грамматические категории английского глагола, как время и залог. В частности, внимание к такому явлению, как употребление зависимых предлогов (dependent prepositions) с глаголами. Так, в первом предложении I managed to ………………. my father from smoking необходимо обратить внимание на зависимый предлог from во фразе from smoking. Из предложенных глаголов только глагол dissuade управляет этим предлогом, следовательно, правильный ответ: I managed to dissuade my father from smoking.

Во втором предложении My sister asked me so many times to help her study for an exam that I finally had to ………………. нужно обратить внимание на фразы asked me so many times и I finally had to со значением уступки. Следовательно, правильный ответ give in- уступить, согласиться: My sister asked me so many times to help her study for an exam that I finally had to give in.

В пятом предложении You should ………………. temptation and have a piece of fruit instead of chocolate необходимо обратить внимание на слово temptation, оно входит в состав устойчивого словосочетания resist temptation, следовательно, правильный ответ: You should resist temptation and have a piece of fruit instead of chocolate.

В шестом предложении You actually let them ………………. you to shave your head? That’s unbelievable! Необходимо обратить внимание на общий смысл предложения. Правильный ответ- уговорить: You actually let them persuade you to shave your head? That’s unbelievable! Начальная форма глагола не меняется, так как употребляется после модального глагола let.

В седьмом предложении Don’t ………………. on your sister. She’s a bit low these days необходимо обратить внимание на зависимый предлог on после пропуска. Из предложенных глаголов нам подойдёт только глагол pick, так как это фразовый глагол: Don’t pick on your sister. She’s a bit low these days.

Данное задание проверяет уровень сформированности умений и навыков чтения с извлечением необходимой информации. Чтобы верно справиться с заданием подобного типа, необходимо внимательно прочитать утверждения после текста, выделить в них ключевые слова, обратить внимание на тот факт, утвердительное утверждение или отрицательное. При чтении обращать внимание на такие наречия, как never, hardly ever, rarely, которые меняют смысл предложения на отрицательный. Необходимо плотно работать с текстом, можно подчеркивать предложения как соответствующие высказыванию, так и противоречащие ему. Это поможет правильно оценить высказывание как верное или неверное. Если в тексте не содержится информации, упомянутой в высказывании, то мы отмечаем как в тексте не сказано.

Итак, обратимся к первому утверждению: Aggressive bullies later regret hurting someone.
